Distillation of squalene from shark liver oil

Squalene is unique sustance that is found in high concentrations within certain varieties of shark liver oil (ranges from 25% to 80%). Squalene is high in Vitamins A and D and also occurs naturally within the human body where it supports the natural lubrication for our skin along with oxygen delivery and toxin removal within all our body’s cells.

To recover the squalene from the shark liver oil FT Technologies offers a process using high vacuum short path (molecular) distillation. The process recovers the squalene as a clear (water like) distillate that has a high squalene concentration.

The FT Technologies process uses the RM series Centritherm® evaporator system incorporating two stages:

Stage 1: Degas and pre-heat the oil using a thin film high vacuum Centritherm® evaporator.

Stage 2: Recover the squalene using a high vacuum, short path Centritherm® evaporator.

The FT Technologies system offers many advantages and produces high grade squalene. The following photo shows the two fractions recovered using the system – on the left is the shark oil feed material, in the middle the stripped residue and on the right the clear squalene distillate.
